Code 210.12(A) The 2014 NEC states in article 210.12(A) that the definition

of arc-fault circuit-interrupter is, "A device intended to provide protection from the effects of arc faults by recognizing characteristics unique to arcing and by functioning to de-energize the circuit when an arc-fault is detected." (A) Dwelling Units.

The Code also requires GFCI protection for luminaries, lighting outlets, cir

culation and sanitation system equipment, and pump motor receptacles located near swimming pools. Per 680.22(A)(5), all 125V receptacles located within 6 m (20 ft) of the walls of a pool or fountain must be protected by a GFCI.
