Section 11 of the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code contains requirements

for inservice inspection of nuclear power plant components. Development of ASME Code requirements for containment inservice inspection was begun in 1977, and in 1979 the first such requirements were published in the form of Code Case N-236.

A Special Notice may also include a revision to a Code Case. The superseded

version of the Code Case shall not be used. Errata to the BPV Code may be posted on the ASME website to provide corrections to incorrectly published items, or to correct typographical or grammatical errors in BPV Codes. Such errata shall be used on the date posted.

In 1969 the ANSI B31.7 Code for Nuclear Power Piping was published. It intro

duced new stress equations for Class 1 piping systems, whereas Class 2 and 3 piping systems were referred back to B31.1. The B31.7 code wanted to apply the same (S,N) curve as ASME III but without having to perform FEA on every pipe fitting and component.

But not all code editions are approved, and the NRC may take exceptions to t

he provisions of a particular Code edition or addendum, which will be spelled out in 10 CFR 50.55(a). A specific ASME III and ASME XI Code edition and addendum of the ASME B&PV Code, and specific Code Cases (CCs) are approved at each individual nuclear power plant.

In the discussion below, we will consider process vessels constructed prior

to 1987, i.e., prior to implementation of the MDMT concept. API 579-1/ASME FFS-1 defines a material’s minimum allowable temperature (MAT) as the permissible lower metal temperature limit for a given material and thickness based on its resistance to brittle fracture.
