Span charts and 2012 IRC building codes for girders and headers. Includes sp

an tables for all load bearing locations and the number of jack studs. These charts are for 30 pound per square foot snow load on the roof. All other data is available on page 121 of the 2012 International Residential Code.

0″ for example) select the Fb column of the lumber you intend to use (in AF&PA Design Values for Joists and Rafters #2 hem-fir = Fb @1104 psi & E @1,300,000 psi— so use span table column Fb 1100). choose the row for the size of lumber used in the double header: use 2×6 in this example.

It went like this: Measure the span in feet and add 2 to that number. The su

m will be the height of your double header in inches. For example, if the span is 4 feet, add 2 to 4 for a sum of 6. Therefore, the header would need to be made from doubled 2x6s.

op floor, you can use 2 2x4's (unless the building is 36' wide, in which case you'll need 2 2x6's). If you have a floor above, you'll need 2 2x6's (unless the building is 36' wide, in which case you'll need 2 2x8's).

To be safe, make the single header 1.5 times as deep. For example, if the co

de specifies a double 2x6 (5½" deep), you would need a single 1½" x 7-13/16" header. Or go up to the next size and use a single 2x10 (9¼" deep).

Most builders automatically choose double -2 x 8 or -2 x 10 headers to frame

windows and doors in every house they build. These headers work to support most residential loads and coincidentally keep the window tops to a uniform height. A neat solution, but is this an efficient and cost effective use of material?

So your jack stud should be cut at 81″ for a 6-8″ tall door. Your header

size is determined by the load it carries. If you are building a new bearing wall or cutting in a new doorway be sure to check your local building code span charts or consult an engineer to properly size the header.

Between 4 and 5 feet, the header should be built 2 inches wide and 8 inches

long while a larger opening needs a header that is 2-by-12. When in doubt, use 2-by-12-inch headers. Step 5 Check your calculations with your local building code officer and apply for any required permits.

As mentioned above, the span tables within the code list the allowable ceili

Measure the distance from the top plate to the header and cut enough cripple

studs to have a standard 16 inches on center spacing between them the length of the window opening. Nail these into place and you have completed a framed window opening.

We are building in climate zone 5 and the county currently enforces the 2009

IBC & IRC. We prepared a list of questions for our building inspector, some of which are location specific, but since we have gotten no response we figured some of this is probably common knowledge. 1. Do non-load bearing walls require structural headers? 2.

If the wall is load-bearing, I refer to the plans for the proper header size

. If not, a 2×4 on the flat replaces the header. In this case, the plans called for a double 2×8 header. I added a 1/2-in. piece of plywood between the 2x8s so that the header width matches the 2×4 stud thickness.
