ngs on each side, and every stairway required to be more than 88 inches in width shall be provided with not less than one intermediate stair railing for each 88 inches of required width.

(g) When the top edge of a stair rail system also serves as a handrail, the

height of the top edge must be not more than 37 inches (94 cm) nor less than 36 inches (91.5 cm) from the upper surface of the stair rail system to the surface of the tread, in line with the face of the riser at the forward edge of the tread.

U.S. codes require railings against a wall to be between 30 inches and 38 in

ches high, while handrails on open stairs must be 34 to 38 inches high.

The IBC commercial building stair code is the mostly widely used stair code.

The commercial code applies to all stairways except those designated under the Industrial or Residential building occupancy classifications. This means it applies to any general use commercial building:

Exterior stair railing code maintains that if your deck's stairs have fewer

than two risers, a rail is not mandatory. On a related note, your deck must have guardrails or similar if it exceeds a height of 30 inches from the ground. Exceptions to the Rule There exist a handful of exceptions to the exterior stair railing code.

To meet building code requirements, the stair railing should be mounted so t

hat the top of the handrail height is 34 to 38 in. above the front edge of the stair nosings. We chose 36 in. Step 3 (below) shows how to find this wall mounted handrail= height point at the top of the stair. Don't be one of those guys!

Railing: As the terms are used by the code, a railing is a form of guard tha

t protects stairs, running on the incline up and down the stairway.

(6) Stair railings and handrails. (a) Every flight of stairs having four or

more risers or rising thirty inches, whichever is less, shall be equipped with stair railings or handrails as specified in paragraphs (F)(6)(a)(i) to (F)(6)(a)(i)(v) of this rule, the width of the stair to be measured clear of all obstructions except handrails.

The IRC requires guardrails to be at least 36" in height, measured from the

deck surface to the top of the rail. Commercial decks attached to multi-family buildings, such as apartment buildings or businesses, are regulated under the International Building Code (IBC). The IBC requires 42" high guardrails.

For stairs with 4 or more risers, most codes require a handrail on at least
