The National Electrical Code® (NEC®) is published by the National Fire Pro

tection Association (NFPA) with the revisions on a three-year schedule. The 2020 NEC, which replaces the 2017 NEC, was issued by the NFPA in August, 2019.

If existing wiring does not meet local codes, chances are that your building

department will not require you to change the wiring. Usually, only new electrical work must be up to code. However, if the old wiring is unsafe, you should change it. Extensive remodeling could also require you to bring the entire house up to current codes.

Many problems stem from new additions to the National Electrical Code (NEC),

Some specific changes to the 2021 Canadian Electrical Code include: Section

Industries Affected by 2020 Electrical Code Updates Almost every industry wi

ll be affected by some part of the 2020 electrical code updates. Primarily, single family and two-family dwellings are the most impacted by the changes. Many of the changes to the code are practices that have already been in place for commercial or industrial buildings.

Most local codes are based on the National Electrical Code (NEC), a document

that lays out required practices for all aspects of residential and commercial electrical installation. The NEC is revised every three years—2014, 2017 and so forth—and occasionally there are important changes to the Code.

BC’s Electrical Safety Regulation has been amended to include the adoption

of the 2018 version of the Canadian Electrical Code. The new code includes several changes to support electrical workers in the safe installation and maintenance of electrical equipment and systems which came into effect on January 1, 2020.

The model code used to update the 7th Edition (2020) FBCB is the 2018 Intern

ational Building Code (IBC). However, not all changes in the 2018 IBC are included in the 7th Edition (2020) FBC. As a result of changes from the 2018 IBC and Florida-specific amendments, certain provisions and criteria of the code have changed.

fective date of the 2020 National Electrical Code (NEC) and the recently revised WAC 296-46B until October 29, 2020 through emergency rulemaking with the support of the Electrical Board.
