Per CPT definition, the codes 99281-99285 are for reporting evaluation and m

anagement services in the emergency department. An emergency department is defined as an organized hospital-based facility for the provision of unscheduled episodic services to patients who present for immediate medical attention.

ER or admitted under "observation" status. Internists performed a total of 1,012,718 of these services in 2003. A consult is provided by a physician whose opinion or advice is requested by another physician about a specific clinical problem or issue.
