es that cover oral health and dentistry. Each procedural code is an alphanumeric code beginning with the letter “D” (the procedure code) and followed by four numbers (the nomenclature). It also includes written descriptions for some of the procedural codes.

The Current Dental Terminology (CDT) code set is maintained by the American

Dental Association. Accurate recording and reporting dental treatment is supported by a set of codes that have a consistent format and are at the appropriate level of specificity to adequately encompass commonly accepted dental procedures.

Dental codes are commonly referred to as CDT-5 codes (Current Dental Termino

logy, Fifth Edition). These codes were developed by the counsel on Dental Benefit Programs and published by the ADA (American Dental Association).

Medical coding relies on three main texts: HCPCS, CPT, and ICD-9. Dental cod

ing, on the other hand, uses a text called Current Dental Terminology (CDT), which is published and maintained by the American Dental Association. This text was specifically created for dental insurance billing and coding.

nsists of codes, descriptions, and definitions that are designed to categorize the type, classification, and/or specialization of health care providers consisting of two sections: Individuals and Groups of Individuals (providers), and Non-Individuals (facilities).

The ADA Current Dental Terminology Codes are revised every two years. Curren

t code additions, deletions and revisions are researchable online, and ADA CDT Code books are available for sale from online sources. New dental products and procedures are developed continually, and not all new procedures have been addressed with CDT Codes.

Dental plans usually group the procedures they cover into three categories:

a) Preventive, b) Basic and c) Major dental services.. The category to which a procedure has been assigned typically indicates the amount of coverage (level of benefits) that the policy provides for that service.

D0180 – Comprehensive Periodontal Evaluation – new or established patien

t: This code is used to report evaluation of periodontal conditions, probing and charting, evaluation and recording of new or established patients’ dental and medical history and general health assessment.

A few codes remain from the previous ADA CDT-2. Two of these are: D6055-Dent

al Implant-Supported Connecting Bar - This code is used to describe a connector bar between abutments, typically designed to stabilize a removable overdenture. This code is for a separate service, not inclusive with the placement of the implants and abutments.
