Except as otherwise provided for in this code, the design, construction, ins

tallation, alteration, repair and maintenance of elevators and conveying systems and their components shall conform to ASME A17.1/CSA B44, ASME A17.7/CSA B44.7, ASME A90.1, ASME B20.1, ANSI MH29.1, ALI ALCTV and ASCE 24 for construction in flood hazard areas established in Section 1612.3.

ved the longstanding amendment to ASME A17.1: Safety Code for Elevators and Escalators requiring a means of elevator ventilation to the outer air from enclosed elevator hoistways and machine rooms.

403.1 Ventilation system. Mechanical ventilation shall be provided by a meth

od of supply air and return or exhaust air except that mechanical ventilation air requirements for Group R-2, R-3 and R-4 occupancies three stories and less in height above grade plane shall be provided by an exhaust system, supply system or combination thereof.

The area of vents in the hoistway or the elevator machine room and the smoke

hole shall be not less than 3 1 / 2 percent of the area of the hoistway nor less than 3 square feet (0.28 m 2) for each elevator car, whichever is greater. Such vents shall comply with the following requirements:

system depending on the machine room’s location in the building and the climate for the local. ASME A17.1, “The Safety Code for Elevators and Escalators,” requires machine room temperature to be as determined by the elevator manufacturer.
