The HS assigns specific six-digit codes for varying classifications and comm

odities. Countries are allowed to add longer codes to the first six digits for further classification. The United States uses a 10-digit code to classify products for export, known as a Schedule B number, with the first six digits being the HS number.

The key in determining whether an export license is needed from the Departme

nt of Commerce is finding out if the item you intend to export has a specific Export Control Classification Number (ECCN). ECCNs are five character alpha-numeric designations used on the Commerce Control List (CCL) to identify dual-use items for export control purposes.

The export statistics are initially collected and compiled in terms of appro

ximately 8,000 commodity classifications in Schedule B: Statistical Classification of Domestic and Foreign Commodities Exported from the United States.

Export Control Classification Number (ECCN) are five-digit alphanumeric desi

gnations established by the commerce control list (CCL) to identify items that fall under Export Administration Regulations (EAR).

The HS number is an internationally accepted code. The basic HS code contain

s 6-digits, known as a subheading. The Schedule B is a 10-digit code built upon the first 6 digits of the HS code. Additionally, the Schedule B code is a U.S.-specific coding system used to monitor U.S. exports (e.g., for export compliance and trade data collection).

An Export Control Classification Number (ECCN) is a five-character alphanume

ric key used in the Commerce Control List (CCL) to classify U.S. exports and determine whether an export license is needed from the Department of Commerce. An ECCN categorizes a product based on its commodity, software, or technology.

You should check with the Department of Commerce to determine the export con

trol commodity number (ECCN) that has been assigned to your type of product. If they do not have your product listed, check Part 748 in the e-CFR to find it yourself.

Commodity Codes are composed of ten digit numbers, however for certain goods

there are an additional four digits. The ten digits are used for imports from outside the European Union and it is needed for TARIC imports declaration. For exports from the UK you only need the first eight digit code.

ECCNs are five character alpha-numeric designations used on the Commerce Con

A Schedule B number is a 10-digit number used in the United States to classi
