One type of drywall that shows up in building codes is what is commonly call

ed fireproof drywall. More accurately, its true name is Type X drywall or fire-rated drywall. While beneficial, fire-rated drywall is often given more attributes than it truly has. This drywall is fire-rated but not fireproof.

creases a wall’s fire rating to a minimum of 1 hour, from the 30-minute rating for standard ½-inch drywall. And it’s not just thickness that makes the difference. Type X has a denser core and contains glass fibers that keep it from crumbling in the heat.

A: Both drywall Type X and Type C are approved for use in a 60-minute rated

design. The wall systems they are approved for are different, however. Type C fire-rated drywall has more glass fiber reinforcement and other ingredients in the gypsum core that makes its fire-resistive properties superior to Type X.

In a new subdivision of single-family homes with attached garages and no sec

ond-floor or attic, the drywall on the wall adjacent to the house is fire-code and fire-taped. However, drywall on the non-adjoining walls was hung with scraps and is not taped--just but-edges.

You may be required by the building code to fire tape the joints between the

sheets of drywall that are hung in these areas. As you may have already guessed, the tape itself is a fire-resistant building material that makes it less likely for flames to find their way between the panels.

Before installing drywall, check with your local building authority. In many
