which are usually on the passenger’s side axle tube, there are literally hundreds of potential codes for the three different 10-bolt rearend housings. Since listing them all within this article is impossible, we’ll be focusing only on visual identification. 7.5-Inch

also used in 68-70 Novas). 67, 68, and most 69 cars received either the 10-bolt 3894859 housing or 12-bolt 3894860 housing and had a two letter axle code.

After 1972, General Motors was only installing its 10-bolt rearend in cars,

but the 12-bolt remained an option for trucks until 1987. When looking at a 12-bolt rearend, it is important to know that 12-bolt axle assemblies use different components for cars and trucks.

In 1969, a 1310 u-joint was used for all applications, and it was attached w

ith straps and bolts. This pinion yoke - also used in 1970 - was part number 3954393 (number on the part is 4394). All 12-bolt pinion yokes have 30 splines, while 10-bolt pinion yokes have 28 splines. The part number for the 10-bolt yoke, for all three years, was 3878968.

If you don't have the codes with you to indentify if it is an 8.5" or not, I

found that if you measure the distance between the very bottom bolt for the cover and the next adjacent one (either right of left), it will be 3 ¾" for a 8.5" and 3 1/4" for a 7.5". All 1978 and up Olds came with 7.5" 10 bolts, no 12 bolts (Chevy or Olds) whatsoever.

The STAMPED codes are suppose to be on the passenger side front of the axle

housing. These are not gang stamped and they're often not real deep either. GM parts book says they should be 8"-10" inboard of the backing plate but GM (itself) often didn't stamp them so there's no real measurement to go by.

Out of a GM four link car, so 78 Impala could be correct. Just from the pics

it looks fairly wide, which is also in agreement with being Impala. It is not a Camaro or Nova (leaf springs). The rear does appear to be a 8.5 version, which are the best 10-bolt rearends for strength.

GM 14 Bolt Axle Overview. The GM 10.5" axle, commonly known as the GM "14 Bo

lt", is an extremely popular rear axle due to its strength, availability, and healthy aftermarket. They feature a massive 10.5" diameter ring gear and pinion with a 3rd bearing at its nose that prevents gear deflection under severe loads.

Compared to the 14 bolt full-float axle, the 14 bolt semi-float has a smalle

r ring gear (9.5″), and the axle shaft can not be removed without also removing the wheels. Still, the 14 bolt semi-float is a solid axle for a lot of applications. Compared to a GM 10 bolt axle (for example), a semi-float 14 bolt is a nice upgrade.
