New COVID-19 ICD-10 Codes Effective January 1, 2021 As we saw in April 2020,

there again will be an expedited release of ICD-10-CM codes related to COVID-19 effective January 1, 2021. The following codes will go into effect on January 1, 2021:

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced on December 3

, 2020, there will be six new International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision, Clinical Modification (ICD-10-CM) codes to better capture the disease process of COVID-19. The codes will be available January 1, 2021, for reporting purposes.

The first of which will review the ICD-10-CM diagnosis code changes for the

upcoming year. Updates that are set to take effect October 1st, 2020 include: 490 new codes, 47 revised codes and 58 deleted or invalid codes. This blog will provide high level key updates for each ICD-10-CM chapter.

The new/changed ICD-10 codes for 2021 have been published and became effecti

ve 10/01/2020. While many changes are included in this update, one of the frequently used codes for Home Health, N18.3 – Chronic Kidney Disease – Stage 3, has been divided into three (3) separate codes. They are as follows:

The first new codes in ICD-10-CM 2021 are A84.81 Powassan virus disease and

A84.89 Other tick-borne viral encephalitis. There are five more new codes under protozoal disease subcategory B60.0- Babesiosis. The addenda file also shows an Excludes1 note for COVID-19 (U07.1) under B34.2 Coronavirus infection, unspecified.

Because ICD-10 code changes are controlled by the government, they work on a

government fiscal year, Oct. 1-Sept. 30. New codes go into effect prior to CPT code changes that happen every January. For that reason, we must be diligent in reviewing our diagnosis codes and habits to prepare for the updates.

Our medical billing and coding company reports on the new ICD-10 codes that
