Check to see if there are other codes paired along with the P0420. If so, ch

eck out those codes first as they can generate false readings and trigger the P0420 code. Determine if the engine is running rough or there is a noticeable skip. Check to see if the temperature sensor indicates a very high or very low engine temperature (bad sensor).

As for the P0420, here's my theory (which fits your fact pattern). BTW, the

P0420 probably won't clear itself, even if you somehow removed the 'cause'. You need a reader/eraser to do that task (or disconnect the battery for 30 minutes or so). The reader/eraser is the better choice - a must-have tool for a Subaru owner.
