A health promoting school is one that constantly strengthens its capacity to

function as a healthy setting for learning, living and working. It allows all members of the school community to work together to provide students and staff with integrated and positive experiences and structures that promote and protect their health.

School-based health centers must provide primary health care on-site (school

-based) or off-site (school-linked). They may also provide mental health care, social services, dentistry, and health education.. Characteristics of SBHCs: They can provide health services to students of all ages, from pre-kindergarten through high school.

School-based interventions and campaigns are used to promote health and addr

ess a wide variety of public health problems. Schools are considered to be key sites for the implementation of health promotion programmes for their potential to reach the whole population in particular age-groups and instil healthy patterns of behavior early in life.

Schools have been a powerful setting to promote health programs [ 1, 2 ]. Th

e School Health and Nutrition (SHN) program is a cost-effective intervention for resource-poor countries where more schools and teachers are available than health care institutions and workers [ 3, 4 ].

In addition to school health promotion initiatives and policies, some rural

schools are able to employ a school nurse or house a school-based health center, both of which work to directly address the health needs of students. These programs are described in the following question.
