92508, or 92526. They do not perform services coded as CPT codes 97110, 97112, 97150, or 97530, which are generally performed by physical or occupational therapists.

CPT Code 92523: Speech Sound Production and Expressive Language Another exam

ple of how a CPT code must provide specific information in the medical record in order to choose the code for billing purposes is CTP code 92523. This code refers to the evaluation of speech sound production.

Currently, CPT code 92506 is billed for the evaluation of speech, language,

voice, communication, and/or auditory processing. This code is considered an “umbrella” code and will be replaced with four new, more specific evaluation codes related to language, speech sound production, voice and resonance, and fluency disorders.

Current Procedural Terminology (CPT ®) codes 92507 and 92508 are defined as

speech/hearing therapy codes. Codes 92507 and 92508 are not considered time-based codes and should be reported only one time per session; in other words, the codes are reported without regard to the length of time spent with the patient performing the service.

An accurate understanding of the coding and billing process is critical for

speech-language pathologists (SLPs) in the outpatient therapy setting.
