Window Header Framing Code

Calculating header size is no picnic as you learn how to frame a window. Her

e are the allowable spans for header sizes in just one of hundreds of situations. If your remodeling or construction plans weren’t drawn up by an architect or structural engineer, work with your building code official to determine the right header size.

Headers shall be supported on each end with one or more jack studs or with a

pproved framing anchors in accordance with Table R602.7(1) or R602.7(2). The full-height stud adjacent to each end of the header shall be end nailed to each end of the header with four-16d nails (3.5 inches × 0.135 inches).

Many of these framing strategies call for single-member headers, and plans t

hat incorporate these headers should always be reviewed by a professional engineer. You could probably devise rules of thumb for designing headers for the particular range of scenarios you are likely to encounter, but that seems like a lot of work and a lot to remember.

To be safe, make the single header 1.5 times as deep. For example, if the co

de specifies a double 2x6 (5½" deep), you would need a single 1½" x 7-13/16" header. Or go up to the next size and use a single 2x10 (9¼" deep).

R602.7 Headers. For header spans see Tables R502.5 (1) and R502.5 (2). So if

you're on the top floor, you can use 2 2x4's (unless the building is 36' wide, in which case you'll need 2 2x6's). If you have a floor above, you'll need 2 2x6's (unless the building is 36' wide, in which case you'll need 2 2x8's).

A window frame supports the weight of the wall around the opening using the

studs to transfer the load to the foundation. At the top, cripple studs transfer the load from the top plate to the header. Along the sides the king and jack studs support the header and transfer the load to the floor.

Most builders automatically choose double -2 x 8 or -2 x 10 headers to frame

windows and doors in every house they build. These headers work to support most residential loads and coincidentally keep the window tops to a uniform height. A neat solution, but is this an efficient and cost effective use of material?

Finding out about Building Codes. The building codes are different depending

on the state and country that you live in. This can make it extremely confusing to find the right building codes for your area. The Internet is the obvious place to look but this can make matters even more confusing.

According to the 2018 IRC, all windows that are more than 6 feet above the g

rade outside the window must have a bottom opening a minimum of 24 inches above the room’s interior floor. Exceptions can be made for windows that do not open more than 4 inches or that have window guards or opening control devices in compliance with ASTM F2090-17.

s cut at 41″. Also, be aware double or triple jack studs may be required based on the opening width and the load the header carries. Be sure to check code requirements prior to framing.

Stack framing 24 inches on-center—where joists, rafters, and trusses align

with studs—has become more common as energy codes call for greater wall insulation and builders opt for 2x6 walls. When a window unit is less than 22 inches wide, the code does not require a header in 24-inch-on-center framing.

Header- the header is ideally a minimum 12’ wide micro-laminated beam that
